WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF SAIKEI?
Saikei is a landscape art form that evolved from Japanese Bonsai and has deeper origins in the Chinese tradition of Pen Jing. Early Japanese scrolls show bonsai compositions that incorporated rocks as key visual elements.
Over time, these rock features became less common in Bonsai, although two rock‑based styles remain:
- Root Over Rock – where roots grow over and cling to the rock before reaching the soil.
- Root On Rock – where the tree is planted directly on the rock without touching the soil below.
Japanese artists also developed multi-tree plantings, leading to the familiar forest and group-style Bonsai arrangements.
Saikei, however, takes a different creative approach. Rather than focusing primarily on the tree, Saikei seeks to recreate natural landscapes using a combination of trees, rocks, soil, moss, and aggregates. The emphasis is on harmony between all elements to evoke the feeling of a real, living environment.
